Public to Private Sector Employment

Transitioning From Public to Private Sector Employment

Considering the current trend toward government efficiency, there will likely be many government employees looking for private sector jobs. Although the full magnitude of the current shift is not completely clear, what is clear is that a notable pool of government employees will be transitioning from public to private sector employment.

In charting this type of move, a primary consideration will be how to align one’s current public sector skillset with the requirements for available private sector positions. Additionally, salary and benefit requirements, as well as overall job security, will also come into play. While there will be skill overlaps, it will be important to strategically recast a candidate’s skills in the private sector vernacular.

As mentioned above, the candidate will need to weigh salary and benefits packages. These may be different from what the candidate has become accustomed to as a public sector employee. This may include the raw salary numbers as well as the options for retirement, which are part of the overall benefits package. Whereas federal employees receive a pension through the Federal Employees Retirement System, private sector employees generally use 401(k) plans. These alternate pathways to retirement will be an adjustment for those transitioning from public to private sector employment, especially if they have invested a number of years in their public sector career.
